High quality care: only for the rich?

Goldcare Clinics has opened an orthopedic clinic in The Hague which focuses on the individual wants and needs of each patient. With the increasing power of insurance companies and the price pressure this entails, hospitals and clinics are forced to organize their care completely in terms of efficiency. This causes a decline in the available time per patient, in turn dramatically impacting the quality of care. Among other things, this is the reason for 80.000 Dutchmen every year to seek better care abroad.

Says orthopedic surgeon Sebastiaan Jansen: 'The single most important concern is to provide the patient with the best healthcare. Because of the forced short consultations, however, this has become somewhat impossible to realize for practically every hospital. Goldcare does not operate under such time pressure, making it possible to thoroughly discuss every treatment, and to completely adjust it to the wants and needs of the individual patient.'

Accordingly, the consultations at Goldcare can take 30 to 60, or even up to 90 minutes. At the hospital, consultations often don't take more than 10 minutes. 'Both the doctors and patients are thus able to make better choices, and to properly prepare the treatment,' explains Jansen. It is also possible for patients to arrange a consultation with top-level specialists, including diagnosis, without having to wait. 'We find it unacceptable that patients have to wait for weeks on end to so much as meet with the right doctor. It is important to the patient to be helped quickly, and we see it takes away a lot of their stress and concerns right away.'

Goldcare is convinced this type of personalized care should become part of the Dutch health care system. Unfortunately, it does not fit in with the constraints and contracts imposed by the insurance companies. That is why Goldcare will remain independent, and consequently our patients will have to pay at least a part of their treatment themselves. Our new approach of "tailored care" will therefore only be available to a select group of people for the time being.

Still, with the increasing desire for better healthcare, Goldcare envisions a quick expansion, leading to other disease areas and new branches.
