Shoulder Prothesis

The treatment of a shoulder prosthesis, also known as shoulder replacement surgery, by our orthopedic surgeon involves replacing the damaged or arthritic shoulder joint with an artificial joint or prosthesis. This surgical procedure aims to relieve pain, restore shoulder function, and improve the patient’s quality of life. Here is an overview of the treatment process for shoulder prosthesis:

  1. Preoperative Evaluation and Planning:
    • The orthopedic surgeon will conduct a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination, medical history review, and imaging studies (X-rays, MRI) to assess the extent of shoulder joint damage and determine if shoulder replacement is appropriate.
    • Based on the evaluation, the surgeon will discuss the surgical options, risks, benefits, and expected outcomes with the patient.
  2. Surgical Procedure:
    • Shoulder replacement surgery can be performed using different techniques, depending on the specific case and the surgeon’s preference.
    • Total Shoulder Replacement: In this procedure, the damaged ball-and-socket joint of the shoulder is replaced with an artificial joint. The surgeon will remove the damaged portions of the humerus (upper arm bone) and glenoid (shoulder socket) and replace them with prosthetic components made of metal and/or plastic.
    • Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement: This procedure is typically performed for patients with severe shoulder joint damage or certain rotator cuff problems. The surgeon reverses the normal anatomy of the shoulder joint by attaching the ball-shaped component to the socket and the socket component to the upper arm bone.
  3. Postoperative Recovery and Rehabilitation:
    • After the surgery, the patient will be closely monitored in the Clinic to manage pain, monitor healing, and start early rehabilitation.
    • Physical therapy and rehabilitation play a crucial role in the recovery process. A structured program is designed to help regain shoulder strength, improve range of motion, and optimize functional abilities.
    • The orthopedic surgeon and physical therapist will provide specific instructions regarding activity restrictions, exercises, and gradual return to normal activities.
  4. Long-Term Follow-up:
    • Regular follow-up visits with the orthopedic surgeon are essential to assess the progress of healing, evaluate the function of the shoulder prosthesis, and address any concerns or complications that may arise.
    • Over time, periodic imaging may be performed to monitor the condition of the prosthesis.

It’s important to note that each patient’s case is unique, and the treatment approach may vary. The orthopedic surgeon of the Eisenhower Clinic will tailor the treatment plan based on the individual’s specific condition, lifestyle, and goals. Following the surgeon’s recommendations, engaging in postoperative rehabilitation, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can contribute to a successful recovery and optimal outcomes after shoulder prosthesis surgery.
